Also known as “coaching,” a verb I like well enough but prefer to keep in the realm of sports.

Mentorship is a good option when you need encouragement, wise editorial feedback, fresh ideas, a brainstorming buddy, and solid craft advice. Think professional writers’ group meets individualized MFA instruction.

I meet with most of my mentorship clients four times a month via Zoom, but I’m open to a variety of arrangements. Send me a message if you’d like to set up a free virtual get-to-know-you.

Mentorship

Testimonials

  • Ginger Eager is a generous and brilliant editor who has a razor-sharp ability to shape a manuscript into the best it can be. Skilled in both big-picture comments and line edits, her suggestions will go beyond what you can see for yourself and will help push a manuscript to its full potential.

  • Ginger Eager is a fantastic writer; her novel The Nature of Remains is proof alone of her talent and craft. And as a fantastic writer with a keen eye and a big heart, she is a fantastic editor and writing guide, too. Her critiques are helpful and motivating. My work, both fiction and nonfiction, has benefitted from her insight. Supportive, smart, and honest in her assessments, she is the real deal.

  • In addition to being a terrific novelist in her own right, Ginger has a sharp eye for what isn’t quite working in a piece and how to fix it. Her advice is always insightful, constructive and encouraging, and she offers it with the empathy of one who knows how hard writing can be. You can have no better ally on your journey to publication.

“Sit. Feast on your life.”

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is what you need when you’ve taken a work as far as you can on your own, but it’s still not quite where you want it to be.

We start by clarifying your goals. A book of childhood memories that you’ll self-publish for your heirs requires a different approach than a memoir that you want to publish traditionally.

Together, we identify your intended audience.

Next, I turn a compassionate and discerning eye to your work in progress.

I read for whole book concerns such as plot, character, pacing, theme, and narrative tension.

I also read in order to respond to all of your questions.

Finally, I consider structure. Are there other forms this work could take that may help it be more fully itself?

We end our time together with a series of conversations and editorial support designed to embolden and empower you in your revisions. Send me a message if you’d like to set up a free virtual get-to-know-you.

“All theorizing is flight. We must be ruled by the situation itself and this is unutterably particular.”
